A force to be reckoned with

Ever since I bought this laptop it’s been nothing but impressive. I’ve come from several generations of Apple laptop, so this is my first ever Windows Laptop I use as my daily driver. I’ve been using the Gigabyte Aorus X5 for coming up to one year now. I have to say wow, it’s served me very well.

The Aorus X5 boasts

  • CPU: Intel i7 Skylake Quad Core 6820HK CPU
  • GPU: Nvidia Geforce GTX 1070 8GB
  • RAM: 16Gb DDR4 2400MHz
  • SSD: M.2 SSD 256GB
  • HDD: 1Tb Hard Drive
  • Monitor: 2880×1620 IPS panel
  • KB: RGB Backlit Keyboard

Sketchy Start

I bought this laptop on a preorder basis from the guys at Scan.co.uk. I usually have no problems with Scan but this had to be a nightmare purchase. The first model I received was faulty as some of the keyboard keys were just not up to par. The keyboard experienced repeating issues when I’d start to type. I quickly spoke to Scan but it was such a faffle, in the end, I spoke with Gigabyte to sort me out with a new laptop. All went well. After that everything went smooth sailing from there. Gigabyte was kind enough to give me a nice gaming backpack ( which I never use), and an Aorus gaming mouse to say sorry for the kafaffling around.

What I use the laptop for

I am a Graphic Designer by profession so I need something that could handle Adobe apps, constant Chrome Tab whoring, and Cinema 4D. The Apple laptops are so insanely priced. this made sense to buy a Windows laptop. I also game when I have the chance so it was nice to have a laptop that could handle all of that. I bring this thing EVERYWHERE with me. The only downside would be that it weighs quite a bit especially when it’s in my backpack. I love the fact it looks different to a Macbook Pro.

The Design

When people mention ‘hardcore gamers, they think of neckbeards or teenagers with no social I am fond of the Aorus’ design but I still think Windows laptops have a long way to go. I think they could have toned down the branding and kept it really simple, but keeping the angular lines. The sides of the chassis could be cleaned up maybe by taking away the lines making it more of a unibody feel.

The screen hinge is strong but could’ve been extended a tiny bit to prevent any screen wobble. I like the back design armed with cooling fins. Again its doesn’t need to be this scary to appeal to hardcore gamers.
